Paper Plates

The dishes are my nemesis. They seem to multiply when they get into the sink. The dishwasher doesn’t empty itself. And these people in my house want to eat every dang day!

I know, I know, I should just do them every night and it wouldn’t be so overwhelming. But by the time I get home, get dinner cooked, kids fed, play with the kids/take care of animals, do baths, and get everyone to sleep, it’s just so hard to go so the dishes at 10:30 when I want to sleep.

While my Cousin Sean was living in our back yard for a month, he frequently noted the dish issue being a problem.

Sean being Sean, he took matters into his own hands. He went to Wal-Mart and bought the jumbo sizes of paper plates, cups, and plastic silverware. “The best way to solve a problem is to eliminate the problem,” he said.

The first night when Ty wanted a regular plate instead of the paper one for his steak, I thought Sean’s head might explode. But other than steak nights, Ty quickly got on board.

I’ll be honest. At first, I felt guilty. I can’t manage to so the dishes for crying out loud? Paper plates are expensive. We are killing the environment. My friend Britt has 6 kids and she washes her dishes!

But I have to tell you, I just let all that go. Paper plates have really helped save my sanity. I will make it up to the environment later and I figure since I don’t drink coffee, I can put what most spend on that beverage into my paper plates. A season will come when I can go back to my beloved Fiestaware. But this is not that season. (This is basically my mantra!)

There is only so much you can do. Only so many hours in the day. Only so much energy to give. And I refuse to feel guilty about that.

Cheers to Sean for removing the problem, one paper plate at a time!
